Caruth Park Underground Detention

The City of University Park, Texas, has been experiencing frequent flooding impacting different parts of the city. Huitt-Zollars was hired by the City to develop a Stormwater Master Plan for the Upper Turtle Creek Basin A. The Stormwater Master Plan divided the basin into three areas of interest. This particular project is the first phase of the University Park Storm Drain Replacement project, which addresses the first area of interest.

Due to the basin’s close to fully-developed conditions and lack of available open space, underground storage was determined to be the best solution to reduce the area’s flooding. HZ’s innovative design, which incorporated a modular concrete stormwater management system called StormTrap®, has reduced flooding, saved on maintenance costs, and minimized resident complaints.

With the installation of an underground detention structure in Caruth Park, the capacity of the City’s stormwater system increased by 11 acre-feet. That equates to just over 3.5 million gallons. Once the storm drain system connecting to the underground detention system is installed, the underground detention system will help maintain Area of Interest 1 inundation extents within street rights of way during a 10-year storm event.
