District Gateway Improvements

The District Gateway Improvements Project was undertaken with the aim of creating a vibrant and inviting entrance into District K in Houston, Texas. The project was designed to enhance the aesthetic appeal of the area while also improving accessibility and safety for pedestrians and motorists at five major intersections along US 90A/South Main: Fondren Road, Hillcroft Avenue, Chimney Rock Road, S. Post Oak Road, and Hiram Clarke Road. The gateways are intended to signal the part of town that folks are in by creating a visual statement through multicolored illumination of underpasses, inspiring community spirit and pride throughout the district.

Huitt-Zollars designed the project which included enhancements to drainage, lighting, striping, landscaping, traffic movement, and pedestrian safety. D G Medina Construction was the project builder/contractor, and Up Art Studio of Houston created the eye-popping lighting scheme. Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone (TIRZ) 25, a tri-party agreement partner with TIRZ 9 and the 5 Corners District to continue making improvements in the area, funded the $1.1M project.
